D Day Background

• Carriers and ships arrive off the coast of Normandy waiting for the assault
• D Day begins during the morning of June 6th 1944
• LCVP vessels carry soldiers from the ships to the shore
• Vessels hold around 20 soldiers
• Thousands of men are slaughtered on the beaches of Normandy 
• Germans fire down upon soldiers from the safety of pillboxes
• Pillboxes- secure concrete bunkers which held the germans
• WW2 Weapons -American: M1 Garand rifle, Germans: MG42 Machine Gun, MP40 submachine gun, Karbiner 98k rifle
• Corsairs-American fighter planes
• Entrenching shovel-shovels to build trenches
• Chest rig - held pouches for ammunition and other things
• German: Amerikaner am strand - Americans on the beach
• Estimated 10000 Allied casualties
• Soldiers often smoked cigarettes during the war to pass the time
• Soldiers also played card games or listened to the music from home
